How much does an N244 application cost?

This guide covers England and Wales

The short answer

The fee depends on what you ask the court to do.

Asking to suspend a warrant of possession (pause an eviction) costs £16. Help with Fees may lower or cover it.

Help with Fees can lower or cover the fee, depending on your income and savings. If your eviction date is close, do not wait for a decision before you send your application.

The main fees

These are from the official list of civil court fees (EX50):

N244 court fees
What you are asking forFee
Court fee to ask the court to suspend a warrant of possession (pause an eviction) using form N244£16
Court fee for a general application made on notice (the other side is told)£321
Court fee for a general application made without notice or by consent (agreed by both sides)£126

The lower fee covers specific requests, such as asking to pause an eviction. If you are not sure which fee applies to your request, ask the court.

Help with Fees

Help with Fees can lower or cover a court fee. Whether you get it depends on your income, savings and other things. Being in debt does not mean you will automatically pay nothing.

You can apply before or after you pay. You can usually ask for a refund if you paid within the last 3 months and were eligible when you paid. If your eviction date is close, do not wait for a refund decision before you send your application.

Apply for Help with Fees online

Getting help with the fee is separate from the judge’s decision about your application.

Check the fee with the court

Fees change from time to time. We checked these on the date at the top of this page. Always confirm the fee with the court before you pay. If you are using form N244 to try to keep your home, read using form N244 to ask the court to pause a repossession.

What to do next

Confirm the fee with the court, and apply for Help with Fees if you think you may qualify.
