N244 checklist: check, sign and send

This guide covers England and Wales

The short answer

Preparing a PDF is not the same as filing an application. Use this checklist before you contact the court handling your case.

If an eviction is close, contact the court and a free housing adviser today. An application does not automatically pause an eviction.

Check, sign and send

Use your own papers and answers. There is nothing to upload here.

  • Check every page of the PDF, including continuation sheets, names, references and requested order.
  • Check each attachment you said you would include.
  • Read the statement of truth. Complete the required declaration, signatures and dates yourself; we do not sign for you.
  • Ask the court handling the case about accepted filing methods, copies, fees or Help with Fees.
  • Keep a copy of the signed application and attachments.
  • Confirm receipt and ask what happens next. Do not assume that sending the form has paused an eviction.
  • Check any hearing date, order or conditions and keep getting advice if time is short.

If you cannot print

Ask the court which submission methods it accepts. A free housing adviser may be able to explain local printing options. If you use a shared printer, collect the papers promptly and protect your private details.

What this checklist does

It helps you organise a form you have chosen to prepare. It does not choose a legal strategy, generate an argument, submit papers, serve parties or promise an outcome.

Our helper covers mortgage eviction in England and Wales. Other N244 uses and rented homes need their own guidance or advice.

  • Where to send an N244 formFind the court handling your case and check its filing, fee and confirmation arrangements. Sending an N244 does not automatically stop eviction.

  • After your N244: refused, paused or no replyWhat to do if the court has not replied, your request was refused, the eviction was paused with conditions, or you may still lose your home.
